Harbour & Boats
Soak up the atmosphere in this magical harbour, which has been sheltering boats from Atlantic wind and waves for over 500 years. You can choose to sit back and enjoy the view, go crabbing, book a boat trip, or go back in time in one of Porlock Weir’s pilot gigs.
Boat Trips
Porlock Weir Charters offers angling and coastal trips from Porlock Weir harbour. The boat ‘Morgan M’ can take up to 10 visitors at one time. Fishing trips are a full day, and follow the Exmoor coastline from Porlock Weir to Lynmouth and Woody Bay, with occasional trips to Lundy Island. Leisure trips along the coastline to Lynmouth and trips around Porlock Bay can also be arranged. Please contact the skipper, Mike Richardson, for details on pricing, timings and availability on 07525 486161.
Porlock Weir Pilot Gig Club
The origins of the Cornish Pilot Gig stretch back hundreds of years. They were originally built at the end of the 18th century to take local pilots out to inward bound sailing ships, in order that they be navigated safely through local waters into port.
Porlock Weir celebrates its history and culture, so it is only right that it is the home of its very own amateur Porlock Weir Pilot Gig Club. With community at its heart, the Club offers competitive opportunities for those interested in participating on a regular basis (including the Isles of Scilly World Pilot Gig Championships). It also offers taster sessions for visitors keen to experience one of Exmoors’ seafaring traditions. For more information contact Benjamin Allerton on 07479 717 197 or porlockweir.pgc@gmail.com.
Mooring
The pretty harbour at Porlock Weir has been in use for centuries and today provides a safe haven on the Exmoor coast for pleasure craft and small fishing vessels. Given this part of the coast experiences a significant tidal variation – often up to 15m – both the outer and inner harbour are dry at low tide. The drying harbour can be accessed for just over an hour either side of high water and is suitable for bilge keelers and other vessels able to take the ground. Other vessels have the option of anchoring just outside the dock entrance or in Porlock Bay.
If you would like to find out about the availability of mooring, please contact the Porlock Harbour Office on 01643 863 187 or Pud the Harbour Master on 07423 283 405.
Crabbing
The harbour at Porlock Weir is one of the finest crabbing spots in the South West, home to the Exmoor World Championship Crabbing Competition and some of the country’s greediest crabs. With a number of spots around the inner and outer harbour, this simple pleasure has delighted children and adults for centuries. Mid and high tide are best. Bait, lines, nets and buckets are all available from the Harbour Stores.
